Māui teachers’ notes

Introduction

Welcome to the Māui teachers' notes. These online support materials, including three teaching units and toolkit, have been developed to be used in conjunction with the theatrical production/DVD Māui – One man against the gods. The notes help teachers and students to:

  • explore ideas and examples of Ngā Toi units as lead-ins to seeing the show
  • explore ideas and units of works as models for planning an implementing your own Ngā Toi programmes after seeing the show.

About the teaching units and toolkit

The units are written as examples and should be used to help teachers plan their own programmes using their own ideas. The three units are aimed for use with students at different curriculum levels:

  • Unit 1 is aimed at wharekura students years 10–13 and focuses on the three disciplines of Ngā Toi.

  • Unit 2 is for middle secondary students, levels 2–3. The focus is on the discipline of puoro.

  • Unit 3 is for junior students years 1–2. It focuses on Mahi a Te Rēhia and Toi Ataata.

There is also a teacher's toolkit section. This includes a comparison study that could be used with senior primary and wharekura students, and a glossary of drama terms, voice, rhythm and warm up exercises.

Comment

By Rawiri Hindle
Coordinator of units for Ngā Toi Online:

"The Māori arts – toi ataata, mahi a te rēhia and toi puoro are vibrant and ever evolving. Contemporary Māori art is asserting itself on the world stage and Tanemahuta Gray's Māui – One man against the gods, is an example of leading-edge theatre that uses te reo Māori, tikanga Māori and comes from a Māori worldview while exploring the escapades of our wonderful tupuna, Māui. Through seeing Māui – One man against the Gods, students in Māori immersion schooling can explore innovative ways to implement creative performance arts programmes.

In 2007 this amazing production could well be appearing in a theatre near you and should not be missed!"
