Secondary School Arts Coordinators Project

The Secondary Schools Arts Coordinators Project is a Ministry of Education project that supports arts curriculum delivery in secondary schools.

The main purpose of the project is to encourage student involvement in the Arts by providing opportunities for the school to draw on the wider expertise of artists and performers in the community/regions and nationally to enrich the in-class curriculum programme. This may include coordinating arts opportunities such as gallery visits, itinerant performances, theatre shows, student arts workshops, competitions and cultural and artistic events.

All state and state integrated schools with years 9 to13 students may apply to participate in the project. Applications for 2008 may be made now. However, before applications for 2008 can be approved, schools that have participated during 2007, will need to send in their yearly report – due on or before 15 November 2007.

School funding
The present funding formula will apply for 2008. The funding allocation is based on $2,000 per year for all state and integrated secondary schools with the residual amount of budgeted funds divided amongst all schools based on their roll number.

2008 Applications
All state and integrated schools with secondary students, including area schools and wharekura, that are offering programmes to students from year 9, may submit an application for their allocation for 2008 by completing the Application Form. Applications must be received at the Ministry by 15 February 2008.

Participating schools may use the funding to employ a person to co-ordinate opportunities that will enhance their arts teachers’ planned, in-class arts programmes.

When an Arts Coordinator is employed in a school, they should liaise with Visual Art, Drama, Dance and Music teachers to determine the most appropriate enriching opportunities that will support the school’s in-class programmes to enhance student learning.

It should be noted that project funding is not intended to be used to pay for:

  • teachers’ salaries (including management units);
  • professional development;
  • entertainment; or
  • repairs or equipment.

The National Secondary Schools Arts Coordinators websites for Dance, Drama, Music and the Visual Arts were disbanded earlier this year and information about artists prepared to visit schools should now be available through the Arts Online website. It is intended that Arts Online http://arts.unitec.ac.nz/ will provide all arts educators, primary through to secondary teachers, with a “one-stop shop” facility through which they will be able to access expertise, opportunities, professional readings, resources and interactive facilities in each of the arts learning areas.

School Letters of Agreement
On acceptance of the Application for 2008, schools will receive a Letter of Agreement to sign. When signed and returned, schools will receive the full yearly amount of funding nominated for their school.

Monitoring and Evaluation of Programme/Report
Please note that from 2008, schools that wish to participate in the project will not be required to supply a copy of the Board of Trustees end of year report to the Ministry.
