Self-portrait reduction print View student artwork
Context
The students develop a self portrait in response to the portrait works of German expressionists and New Zealand artist, Nigel Brown.
Learning sequence
Students make a black and white graphic copy of the selected artist's work, (German expressionist portrait), using ink on an A3 page. (No blending or shading). They learn the mathematical relationship of features and how these are arranged in frontal and profile situations.
They make detailed drawings of separate facial features, looking at shape and tone. Students produce blended portrait drawings using black and white pencil on grey paper from high contrast photographic resource, (a digital self-portrait). Emphasis is on tonal contrast and recording specific features and expression.
Students experience the concept of negative space and ways of making marks – brown and white pastel on black paper. Words are introduced that specify cultural identity, based on the Nigel Brown model.
A test print is made in black ink on white exploring cutting effects and reversing letters.
A final brown black and white print is made. Students cut white and print brown, then cut brown and overprint with black.
The images show planning, composition and a final print.
