Biennial art auctions
Fund-raising art auctions have become a biennial event at Macandrew School.
Fund-raising art auctions have become a biennial event at Macandrew School. As Lesley Hirst recalls, "Ludmilla Sakowski – one of the great team of highly motivated art-educators, teachers and artists that help organise the many art events at the school – initiated our first fund-raiser based on the belief that 'children are the greatest treasure that a country can have' ".
That first auction was relatively small: 20 artists donated their work, including noted artist educators Ralph Hotere and Marilyn Webb. With the support of art dealer Marshall Seifert, and with Trevor Plumbly as the auctioneer, the event was highly successful and wonderfully entertaining.
Student works auctioned
The selected student works are auctioned along with the works of professional artists from Dunedin and from other parts of New Zealand. For the two weeks prior to the event, the students' works hang alongside the big names: Ralph Hotere, Marilynn Webb, Grahame Sydney.
Over 600 people viewed the last exhibition. The student works stood on their own merits in what is now regarded as one of the more important events in the Dunedin art calendar.
The process of making an artwork, having it selected, framed, auctioned, and sold is a source of great pride for the students, and it is emotionally and financially rewarding.
Some of the students' works are purchased by the Trust. They then become part of the school's permanent Student Art Collection, which is on display in the school corridors for viewing by teachers, other students, parents and visitors.
