Art camp
Last year saw the first of a new and exciting opportunity for Macandrew's art scholars and 12 other students – they were sponsored by a local Dunedin organisation, the St Clair Trust, to spend one week at the Trust's lodge at Wanaka.
Outdoor art
With artist Janet de Wagt, the children were free to make art from dawn until dusk. One morning, they began painting at the very top of the Crown Range road at 6.15 am, stopping for breakfast at 9.30 am.
Making art non-stop, virtually all outdoors, was an experience few of them will ever forget. It was energising and motivating.
Gone painting
As a result, two of the boys devised a plan. When they leave school at 18, they are going to convert an old 'Combi' van, pile it up with paint and paper, and spend a year travelling the South Island, living in beautiful places, and just painting.
"And where were they going to get the money, you ask?" Lesley recalls. "Why, by selling their paintings of course! Well, some of them. The boys said they would want to keep the special ones for themselves!"
