Workshops: objectives and aims

Workshop 1


Objective: to plan the project.
Aims:

  • decide on the dimensions of the banners;
  • decide on the development sequence;
  • research the possible visual content;
  • decide on the compositional structure of the banners.

Workshop 2


Objective: To develop the painted background.
Aims:

  • explore mixing new colours from the primaries, plus white;
  • explore ways of applying paint to achieve different surface effects;
  • discuss how colour could convey the characteristics of each matiti;
  • explain how the banners will be built up by successive layers, which will begin with a painted base colour in each of the five zones of the composition. Both the choice of colours and the ways the paint is applied should express the nature of the zone and the characteristics of the particular matiti.

Workshop 3


Objective: To construct the sun.
Aims:

  • explore construction techniques with card and paper, including folding, bending, scoring, curling, and gluing;
  • develop ideas for building and decorating the sun, with reference to customary kowhaiwhai and whakairo patterns.

Workshop 4


Objective: To stencil and sponge areas of the painted background.
Aims:

  • explore stencilling and sponging techniques;
  • develop stencils to convey layers and textures of the sea and bush zones;
  • develop tonal variations in other parts by overlaying with sponged paint.

Workshop 5


Objective: To develop the environments of each of the five zones.
Aims:

  • explore ways of using cut and torn paper to create texture and colour;
  • use collage techniques to develop sea creatures and birds;
  • develop marae images, and represent seasonal marae activities with collage and weaving techniques;
  • weave birds using flax.

Workshops 6 and 7


Objective: To developing printing plates for fish motifs.
Aims:

  • develop ideas for fish motifs, with reference to customary Māori art forms;
  • build layered card and etched polystyrene printing plates from these designs;
  • print the plates to create repeating fish patterns in the ocean zone.

Workshops 8 and 9


Objective: To arrange and resolve the compositions.
Aims:

  • explore techniques with crayons and pastels – dye resist, sgrafitto, frottage, and other texturing effects;
  • refer to the visual arts elements, principles, processes, and conventions to resolve visual problems and integrate the separate zones of the banners.

Workshop 10


Objective: To develop border designs to unify the five separate banners.
Aims:

  • develop a title for each banner in the form of a heading strip;
  • design taniko-like borders for the bottom of each banner using cut paper;
  • design crayon, pastel, and dye resist kowhaiwhai-related borders for the sides of the banners.
