Background
This case study provides an example of how exemplars have
been used to help students assess their own learning and to enhance a school-wide
improvement in writing.
Context
Five Forks school is a full primary with a roll of 26 (2002) sited in the Waitaki district, Oamaru. General
information about Five Forks School is available on the
TKI schools database.
Achievement target
The school set the following achievement target:
-
To raise achievement standards of all students in writing to the level demonstrated
in the National Exemplars.
This target was based on the belief that the writing shared through national exemplars was superior to writing within the school.
It was also perceived that students had a negative attitude to writing and the predominant writing focus was on surface features.
This case study was based on the following process:
- Analysis of writing using the matrix and samples provided by the national exemplars.
- A review of the current programme – what do we do now?
- A review of marking procedures – how are we analysing our writing?
- Develop and implement school-wide writing targets with students.
- Implement three focused units of work around Poetic Writing – Personal Experience.
- Monitoring the impact of the programme through self-assessment and through analysis of the writing samples against the matrix and samples from the national exemplars.
