Classroom initiatives – Improving assessment practice

1. Communicate the purpose of learning and expected outcomes to children, using language they understand.

  • Let's look at a way to help us work out this problem...
  • When you are reading this, I want you to practise...

2. Discuss the activity in relation to the purpose, using exemplars and modelling where appropriate.

  • Why is this a great example? How could you do something similar?... Let's 'unpack' this...
  • Tell me why this photography really sets the scene.
  • What was clear about the way the speaker gave instructions?

3. Give feedback that is descriptive and specific to the student's work at the time, or as soon as possible.

  • Why have you selected this piece of work?
  • What do you like the most and least about it?
  • Tell me how your work relates to the expected outcomes and/or standards?
  • I can see you have made a real effort to...

4. Agree on the next steps in learning, and brainstorm strategies to achieve goals.

  • What is still not clear?
  • What do you think you can do on your own now?
  • What do you want to do next, and how will you do it?
  • When will you be able to do this and show me?

5. Expand thinking by discussing links to other experiences.

  • What have we discovered that we could use again?
  • Where does this learning fit in the real world?
