The matrix

This matrix sets out the visual arts curriculum achievement objectives across levels 1 to 5, as demonstrated in students' work.

It can be viewed in two formats:

This indicator will open in a new window Levels 1–5 displayed horizontally as in the sets distributed to schools
This indicator will open in the current window Levels 1–5 displayed vertically

About the Progress Indicators

The indicators show how students might progress in key aspects of the visual arts in levels 1–5 of The Arts in the New Zealand Curriculum. The exemplars available in print, online, and on the CD-ROM show many, but not all, of these progressions.

Although the matrix is set out as a table, which may suggest linear progression, this is not intended. In practice, learning in the visual arts is spiral in nature, incorporating earlier learning and building on itself. The matrix is an indication of possible signposts in learning journeys in the visual arts. Students will travel in many different ways.
