The task

The teacher showed the students a region with a unit fraction shaded and asked them to identify how much of it was shaded. If they could identify this verbally, the teacher asked them to write down their answer.

Nathaniel's work shows that he is able to:

  • identify how much of the region is shaded
  • use the correct name for the fraction: "A quarter of this shape is shaded."
