What the work shows

The task

The students are required to compare two lengths. The teacher set the question "Will the table fit through the door?"

Images of student problem solving process

Emma's work shows that she is able to:

  • identify the attributes to be compared (the widths of the table and the doorway)
  • indirectly compare the two lengths by using an object (a piece of string).

Siata's work shows that she is able to:

  • identify the attributes to be compared (the widths of the table and the doorway)
  • indirectly compare the two lengths by using a third length (an arm span)
  • state which object is longer: "The door is wider than the table, so it will fit through."

Siata cannot, however, quantify the "size" of the difference.
