The task
The students are required to compare two lengths. The teacher set the question "Will the table fit through the door?"
Ben's work shows that he is able to:
- identify the attributes to be compared (the widths of the table and the doorway)
- use an appropriate measuring tool (a metre ruler)
- choose an appropriate metric unit (a centimetre)
- line up the end of the ruler with the end of the table
- accurately measure relevant lengths (those of the doorway and the appropriate side of the table)
- read the scale accurately
- state the measurements using the correct units: "The table is 53 centimetres. The door is 90 centimetres."
