What the work shows

The task

The students are required to compare two lengths. The teacher set the question "Will the table fit through the door?"

Images of student problem solving process

Ben's work shows that he is able to:

  • identify the attributes to be compared (the widths of the table and the doorway)
  • use an appropriate measuring tool (a metre ruler)
  • choose an appropriate metric unit (a centimetre)
  • line up the end of the ruler with the end of the table
  • accurately measure relevant lengths (those of the doorway and the appropriate side of the table)
  • read the scale accurately
  • state the measurements using the correct units: "The table is 53 centimetres. The door is 90 centimetres."
