What the work shows

The task

The teacher presented the students with a bucket containing two red balls and two blue balls. He asked them to determine the probability of getting two red balls if they randomly selected two balls from the bucket.

Images of student problem solving process

Angus's work shows that he is able to:

  • calculate the possible outcomes
  • use the possible outcomes to identify the probability of getting two red balls.

Images of student problem solving process

Kiri's work shows that she is able to:

  • find the possible outcomes using a tree diagram
  • use the possible outcomes to identify the probability of getting two red balls: "Two out of twelve are both red."
