What the work shows

The task

The teacher presented the students with a bucket containing two red and five blue balls. She asked them to determine the probability of getting one ball of each colour if they randomly selected two balls from the bucket.

Images of student problem solving process

Haniko's work shows that he is able to:

  • accurately draw and label a probability tree
  • identify desired outcomes (one red ball) on a probability tree
  • add together the possible probabilities to correctly answer a question.

Images of student problem solving process

Marian's work shows that she is able to:

  • understand that the sum of the probabilities of all outcomes must add to one
  • calculate some probabilities
  • use known probabilities to find an unknown probability.
