The task

The teacher set the problem: "Billy has $25, and Sam has $9. How much more money than Sam has Billy got?" She asked the students to explain how they got their answer.

I said 25 take away 9. I took 5 away to get 20. Then I took another 4, and that's 16. Images of student problem solving process

Roimata's work shows that she is able to:

  • solve subtraction problems
  • derive an answer from known basic facts.

I said: 25 take away 9. I took away 10 'cos that's easy, and then I added 1 back on. That makes 16. Images of student problem solving process
