What the work shows

Emily and Sara's letters offering native plants to another school shows their commitment to environmental values. The plants are surplus seedlings from their native bush area and the students are trying to generate interest in native plants and encourage others to become environmentally aware. Their work shows their enthusiasm and willingness to engage in environmental issues.

Emily and Sara's letter demonstrates enthusiasm and excitement about science when they try to enthuse others to grow native trees, and shows them pursuing scientific activities without prompting outside the formal learning environment.

Emily and Sara show they are taking collaborative action to protect and enhance their environment.

Engaging in social issues
They understand that the trees they plant will be there long-term and that caring for trees is a social issue related to science and the environment, and that they have demonstrated social responsibility by providing planting and care instructions.

Using scientific ideas in constructing explanations
Sara and Emily construct a plausible explanation, using some scientific ideas when they explain the care and uses of a plant.
