Investigating in Science
Making predictions
Ewan uses his own ideas to make testable predictions (L 3).
Using systematic approaches and scientific conventions
Ewan plans and carries out a systematic trial, using measurement to identify patterns and test ideas. In his investigation and recording, he details the steps needed to ensure a "fair test". He has also begun to use some scientific conventions, using tally marks to initially record his results before graphing his findings (L 3).
Processing and interpreting
Ewan organises data to display obvious trends and patterns and to reach simple conclusions linked to his own understandings (L 3).
Evaluating the investigative process as a continuous activity
In commenting "I'm not sure that we were really testing absorbency ..." in discussion with the teacher Ewen identifies the strengths and weaknesses of his own investigation and reviews his data-gathering procedures honestly (L 4).
Reporting
Ewan presents an organised report linking the findings to his observations (L 3). |
Thinking in Scientific Ways
Suggesting explanations
Ewen thinks about his results. In his response, he seeks other possible explanations that fit the evidence (L 5).
Evaluating the quality of evidence and accepting uncertainty
Ewan's response to his teacher during their conversation shows that he is aware of the need to assess the quality of the evidence (L 4). |
