The following matrices relate to the achievement objectives at levels 1 to 5 of Social Studies in the New Zealand Curriculum. The teachers' notes offer a fuller explanation of the purpose, structure, and uses of the matrices.
The strand matrices
The progress indicators for the content strands have been developed to help teachers to understand and evaluate their students' progress and achievement in social studies. They link closely with the annotations on each exemplar. There are five strands, with two matrices of progress indicators for each strand. Each of these matrices is preceded by the relevant achievement aim and achievement objectives. The key concepts in the progress indicators for each level are highlighted in bold in the achievement objective above those indicators.
The matrix for each process (Inquiry, Values Exploration, and Social Decision Making) describes steps that students may take in their learning path as they work through each process. These paths may vary according to the student's level of learning. Each exemplar includes a section describing the steps in the pathway for each process used.
