Teachers and students need to set attainable goals for raising achievement. The commitment from these shared expectations is the glue that holds teaching and learning teams together. It fosters collaborative decision-making and discussion about learning, and helps teachers and students gauge their own success.
Building students' understanding
Students need to know what they are supposed to be doing and why. It is not enough for teachers to simply explain their objectives or requirements. Often, students don't understand what these mean in practice, or what appropriate work looks like.
To help students see that there are many ways to achieve their goals, teachers can:
- encourage students to evaluate one another's work so that they get a 'nose for quality'
- hold one-on-one conversations about a student's best pieces of work.
Exemplars provide another opportunity to discuss authentic examples of students' work. View the PowerPoint to become familiar with the purpose and structure of the exemplars and find out how to use them for planning, teaching, and assessing classroom practice.
