Assessment at school

All kids can learn but often they don't see the point and they don't want to. So hooking into motivation is critical, and if you're focusing on feedback that helps kids to learn then that helps to make a difference to their motivation.

Assessment tools
Your child's learning will be assessed throughout their time in early childhood education and at primary and secondary school. Assessment gives teachers useful information about how well students are progressing, and what students need to do next to continue learning.
While some types of assessment provide a mark or a score, teachers interpret the results in ways that give the student much more information than a mark out of 10 would ever provide. Teachers also use examples of other students' work as a basis of assessment.
At secondary school, assessment against national standards leads to the National Certificate in Educational Achievement (NCEA) qualifications.

Assessment policy
Every school is required to have a policy on assessment and can provide you with a copy if requested.
Assessment guidelines
Every secondary school student receives assessment guidelines for each subject they are taking at the start of the year. The guidelines show how each subject will be assessed and when. Parents will find the guidelines a useful way to keep track of their son or daughter's study and progress during the year. You can ask your child or their teacher for a copy of the assessment guidelines.
