Assessment CAST
CAST stands for Computer-Assisted Statistics Teaching, a course in introductory statistics developed
for Massey University.
This module, Assessment CAST can be used as a professional development tool to improve
understanding about statistics. It assists teachers and management to summarise and display assessment data as a
graphical presentation. This could be useful for planning and reporting purposes, feedback, analysing trends or
making comparisons, and informing the next step for class or school-wide programmes.
For an overview of the contents in Assessment CAST, view the sitemap. We recommend you print this to help
you navigate through the module.

- Safari
- Mozilla
Internet Explorer (IE) Information Bar and CAST
Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) includes new features such as displaying an Information Bar (just below the address bar) in Internet Explorer (IE) where you can see information about downloads, blocked pop-up windows, potential security risks, and other activities.
With IE default settings on, you will see the Information Bar when a website tries to:
- install an ActiveX control on your computer
- open a pop-up window
- download a file to your computer.
When accessing CAST by clicking the !-StartHere.html file, you may see a message in the Information Bar. Click the message to see more information or to take action.
For further details on the IE Information Bar visit the Microsoft website.
Software
Assessment CAST uses programs written in Java for the interactive diagrams. Most recent computers have built-in support for Java.
Java was developed by Sun Microsystems. It is not directly supported by Microsoft in its operating system or web browser. Since early in 2003, Windows XP does not run the Java diagrams in CAST without separate installation of Java support.
If you have a new PC with Windows XP and find that the Java diagrams do not work - there should be an error message when you start CAST - then you will need to install Java support. You can find more information about whether your browser currently supports Java.
