Using data
Decisions based on statistics for classroom teachers and management
Teachers are often required to make use of classroom data to inform teaching and learning decisions. Similarly, senior
management and school principals need reliable data effectively collated and presented to confirm management decisions.
Annual reporting to the board of trustees and the local community focuses on evaluating plans and targets for student outcomes
as set out in each school's charter.
The National Assessment Strategy reminds us that:
Information about assessment can be used to improve teaching and learning. It enables teachers and schools to report on what
students have achieved at certain points in time, and provides assurance to parents, boards, and the public about the quality
of education. (National Assessment Strategy)
The appropriate collation and analysis of relevant assessment information is a vital component in the development of teacher
assessment literacy. To make informed decisions, stakeholders need to understand what the information means, and what it is,
or is not, telling them about their students.
The TKI Governing and Managing community has further information about Planning for better
student outcomes The section on Data Analysis details the importance of collecting
and analysing timely and relevant data to inform decision making at the classroom level and/or school-wide level.
Assessment CAST
Teachers can use this tutorial to help them analyse
classroom assessment data. The tutorial is a module
from a course in introductory statistics, Computer-Assisted
