Education for Sustainability

Kia ora, kia orana, fakaalofa lahi atu, taloha ni, talofa lava, malo e lelei, bula vinaka and welcome to the Education for Sustainability (EfS) kete.

Sustainability is a critical issue for New Zealand environmentally, economically, politically, and socially. The New Zealand Curriculum encourages students to look to the future and contribute to the well-being of New Zealand. By exploring significant future-focused issues they can start thinking and acting sustainably and become active participants in a range of life contexts.

Education for Sustainability (EfS) fosters innovative approaches to curriculum design and review, including such concepts as cooperative learning; inquiry-based learning; experiential learning; innovative, critical and creative thinking; and reflective practice. EfS makes connections between the learning areas, vision, principles, values, and key competencies of The New Zealand Curriculum.

The national EfS advisory team supports schools in implementing the sustainability aspects of The New Zealand Curriculum. Facilitators are contracted by the Ministry of Education through School Support Services attached to universities. The EfS facilitators’ website will soon merge with the Te Kete Ipurangi (TKI) website.

The signpost menu on the right-hand side of the screen will help you to find resources across all learning areas, with links to websites and relevant organisations.
