Strand aims
Students should be able to:
- Engage with and enjoy oral language in all its varieties;
- Understand, respond to, and use oral language effectively in a range of contexts.
Examples of student activities
- Listen to and respond to others during class or group discussions
on environmental issues. (Levels 1 and 2)
- Identify the main ideas when listening to a recording relating to
an environmental issue. (Levels 1 and 2)
- Listen to stories on environmental issues from a particular genre,
such as traditional Māori stories. (Levels 3 and 4)
- Practise note-taking when listening to an invited guest speaker
talking on environmental issues. (Levels 5 and 6)
- Listen to a debate on an environmental issue and identify social,
cultural, and historical influences on people's attitudes. (Levels 7 and 8)

Strand aims
Students should be able to:
- Engage with and enjoy oral language in all its varieties;
- Understand, respond to, and use oral language effectively in a range of contexts.
Examples of student activities
- View a wordless text, such as a painting of the environment or kowhaiwhai, interpret what it means and act out a text. (Levels 1 and 2)
- Develop some focus questions and conduct an interview with an older person in the community on how the local environment has changed since they were young. (Levels 1 and 2)
- Prepare and present an oral report following a visit to a site in the local environment. (Levels 3 and 4)
- Prepare a report for a radio station on an environmental issue and reflect language features and conventions that are appropriate to the station's audience. (Levels 5 and 6)
- Prepare and conduct a debate on an environmental issue. (Levels 5 and 6)
