Biodiversity in New Zealand Wildlife

5. Kiwi or kakapo website

Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to:

  • state the human impact which has resulted in the decline of the kiwi or kakapo;
  • identify organisations involved in the recovery programmes;
  • work cooperatively to achieve a common goal.

Teaching and learning activities

Use a jigsaw activity to group the students into two large groups. From these two groups divide the students into pairs. One half of the class will be studying the kiwi, the other half the kakapo.

Students will need to have access to the following websites in order to complete this activity:

Kakapo Recovery Programme http://www.kakaporecovery.org.nz

In pairs students explore the appropriate website and follow and complete the tasks outlined in the kiwi work sheet (pdf, 16kb), (word, 55kb) or the kakapo work sheet (pdf, 8kb), (word, 63kb).
