This is a transcript of Francis' speech, which illustrates how students were involved in education "for" the environment at Otari School.
This year I'm at Wellington High School but last year I was at Otari School where I wrote this essay.
In term 2 this year Otari School started a Hauora team. Four students were selected to be this team, myself included. You are probably thinking that by Hauora (meaning health) I am talking about health as in sickness and medication. But I'm not. I'm talking about any type of health, mental and physical. I just thought I'd better make that clear.
Soon after we first got together we met with a HPS member. She worked with us on running surveys. Then, with the help of a teacher, two surveys were distributed to every child in the school. One was about the cleanlinessss of Otari School, the other about the friendliness of it.
The results were quite positive. Despite most students finding the school unclean, all found it a very friendly place. So now what? you may ask. Well we are currently devising a survey to find out what is most important to the students. Upgrading playground facilities, getting rid of litter or getting some shade around the school.
