Primary Units

New Social Studies Resources on Environmental Justice
Check out these two teaching units aimed at levels 1–5 of the social studies curriculum. The units fit in with campaigns and activities that Trade Aid will be running in communities around New Zealand for 2008–09. Resource packs can be ordered online to accompany these units.

Biodiversity in New Zealand Wildlife
This Education for Sustainability and social studies unit plan for years 5 to 8 covers preserving the environment; extinct and endangered animals; environmentalist intervention in relation to endangered animals; how pests affect indigenous habitats; and consequences of the loss of biodiversity caused by pests, predators, and domestic pets.

Streams and Waterways: Strife in Streamville
This Education for Sustainability and social studies unit plan for years 5 to 8, looks at the impact humans have on the environment; the attitudes and values of different users of the waterway; different types of pollution; how different activities affect places and the environment; and Māori values related to use of streams and waterways. Students will research local ecological heritage sites, and create an environmental project.

Kiwi Forever resource
This new kiwi resource has a tikanga Māori focus for primary aged students. The kit contains activities and lesson plans, with some appendix cards in te reo Māori, and integrates environmental education, science/putaiao, social sciences, and tikanga a iwi. Heritage Heroes
This Education for Sustainability and social studies unit plan for years 9 and 10 covers the concept of participation and social action in relation to significant places and environments.

World Heritage in Our Hands
This Education for Sustainability and social studies unit plan for years 9 and 10 covers natural and cultural heritage sites, and the value of world heritage sites.

Sustainable Futures
This is an outline of a year 12 course at Christchurch Girls' High School. When creating the Sustainable Futures course, the school planned to go beyond integrating Education for Sustainability into other areas. The aim of the course is to encourage students to follow up issues of concern with respect to the environment and the future.
