While there are sound educational reasons for involving students
in the planning of an EOTC activity, the primary responsibility
for ensuring student safety rests with the teacher and ultimately
the board of trustees.
As safety is a key part of EOTC planning, it is important that students are
empowered with knowledge and skills to take greater responsibility
for their own actions. This can help ensure the procedures
they have helped to develop are followed. It also gives them
transferable skills that can be applied in their own recreational
pursuits. Similarly, involving parents and other helpers in
the EOTC planning process can facilitate a greater understanding
of their role and responsibilities regarding the safety of
all.
