Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Where do I find people who have these qualifications?
A.

If you require expertise from people outside the school there are many outdoor providers who will contract out their services to schools. Their availability varies in different areas.

To get help identifying providers, contact:

  • professional organisations related to the outdoors, e.g., The NZ Outdoor Instructors' Association maintains a database of instructors in the bush, mountain, rock, kayak, canoe, cave and outdoor safety management discipline;.
  • national bodies associated with the activity, e.g., The New Zealand Mountain Safety Council has a national register of volunteer instructors in a number of disciplines including: bush, mountain, outdoor first aid, abseil, risk management, firearms;
  • Colleges of Education School Support Services;
  • Education Outdoors New Zealand;
  • the Internet, yellow pages;
  • outdoor centres;
  • colleagues in other schools.

See Appendix for contact details of professional bodies and national organisation..

Once you have identified a likely provider, the critical step is to check that they are competent and are adhering to accepted professional practice.
