Foreword
A basic aim of education is to provide all learners
with the knowledge, skills, and attributes that enable them to go
on learning in a changing world.
Such developments cannot take place solely within
the confines of school or centre buildings, and for many years New
Zealand children of all ages have had their learning extended and
enhanced through activities that take place away from these buildings.
These activities, whether supporting one aspect of learning or linking
several, have become known as EOTC (education outside the classroom/centre).
They are accepted as an essential part of the curriculum.
These guidelines were first drafted by a Department
of Education working party that met from 12–18 June 1989. Members
of the working party were Gerald Rawson (convenor), Bev Abbott,
Vicky Adams, Nancy Barclay, Bill Barrett, Marg Cosgriff, Bob Fowlds,
Rei Hamiora, Anna Herries, Eric Jackson, Grant Jones, Barry Law,
Anne Paki, Clark Pollitt, Mike Prebble, Ted Preston, Eric Schusser,
and Margaret Stothart.
Anywhere, Everywhere: EOTC Curriculum Guidelines for Primary School, Secondary
Schools, and Early Childhood Centres is intended for managing bodies, principals,
head teachers, and teachers. Its publication establishes the place of EOTC in
the curriculum.
