Basketball Clinic (Years 7 - 11)
Language focus: Writing instructions (imperative verbs)
For each of the three drills, students choose the correct phrase to complete a sentence and then sequence the sentences to correctly describe each drill. When the text and sequence for the drill is correct, students can see an animated version of the drill. This provides the context to begin a sequence of lessons on writing instructions.
Before using the digital object
Ask students to notice:
- the form of the verb at the start of each instruction;
- how many steps of the drill are in each sentence.
After using the digital object
Using the basketball manual as your model text in step one, discuss the language features and text structures of instructions following all four steps of joint construction of text.
Further work
Ask students to think about whether:
- the instructions make sense without the diagrams;
- how the instructions would be written differently if there were no diagrams.
