Enrolment Procedure for ESOL Primary Students

This enrolment procedure was written as a result of several requests from
principals for help to navigate the complexities of enrolling students recently
arrived in New Zealand especially those from non-English-speaking backgrounds.
It is a very basic procedure that they can be adapted to suit the needs of
the school community. It is still in draft form and any comments and improvements
would be very welcome.
The Aims
To ensure that newly arrived ESOL students:
- are eligible to attend school in New Zealand;
- are welcomed into the school;
- have their language and learning needs identified;
- receive full information about the school;
- are placed in appropriate classes;
- have teachers who are prepared to receive them.
