Purpose
The Talent Development Initiatives Funding Pool is available as part of the New Zealand Government's gifted education policy.
The purpose of the funding pool is to support:
- the development of innovative approaches in gifted education that result in improved outcomes for gifted and talented students
- research into the impact innovative approaches have on learning and teaching
- the sharing of knowledge, understanding, and models of effective practice with others in the education sector.
Funding update
Twenty-one initiatives, aimed at improving outcomes for gifted and talented students, have been funded through the Talent Development Initiatives Funding Pool.
Schools, kura kaupapa Māori, community groups and national organisations were invited to apply to the contestable Talent Development Initiatives Funding Pool. The selection panel received 79 applications, which went through two stages of selection. Proposals were ranked against selection criteria and considered in relation to the overall objectives of the pool and the research priorities, laid out in the proposal guidelines.
The large number of high-quality proposals highlighted the growing awareness of the need to provide gifted and talented students in New Zealand schools with an individualised and appropriate education. The diversity of proposed programmes also highlighted the multiple approaches to identification, approach and provisions practised by New Zealand schools.
This reflects the Government's policy of supporting a range of provisions to support the individual needs of students, schools and communities. It also reflects the role of the Talent Development Initiatives Funding Pool in promoting innovation and diversity.
The 2006–2008 Talent Development Initiatives network is split into two groups of programmes: TDI Ignite and TDI Enhance.
