School Support Services

The provision of professional development and support for teachers and principals will continue to be a key focus of the services purchased through the six School Support Services. These programmes aim to meet nationally and locally negotiated outputs that reflect government priorities as well as the needs identified in local areas. In negotiating these outputs, the Ministry will expect each School Support Services to ensure the services purchased reflect the needs identified by their local schools.

The facilitators played a key role in improving teachers' professional knowledge and classroom practice. Teachers commented on the usefulness of demonstration lessons, the presentation and discussion of the progressions of number knowledge and strategies, and the in-class support. The importance of any [professional] development being syndicate-based or school-wide and supported by senior staff was evident in the comments from several teachers.

Wellington: 29 August 2001

Today the Education Minister, Trevor Mallard, announced that the Government was providing continuous funding under a rolling three-year contract to secure the future of the country's School Support Services. He also confirmed that the services are to have their first funding increase since 1989. The additional funding should enable the Ministry to ensure that services are able to provide a greater emphasis on the local needs of schools.
