| The Arts/Ngā Toi |
The Ministry has a strategy in place to ensure that, over the next four years, there will be a growing capability in the arts within schools and communities. A key component of this strategy is the professional development programme for teachers.
Programmes for professional development based on The Arts in the New Zealand Curriculum will continue throughout New Zealand in 2002. Professional development programmes based on ngā toi will commence in 2002. These programmes will include a focus on new teaching and learning materials being published by the Ministry for the arts/ngā toi. For secondary teachers, strong links to the NCEA will be established.
The national coordinators of dance, drama, music, the visual arts, and ngā toi will help to implement these contracts. They provide specialist advice and support where required, as schools' kaupapa move towards adopting the new curricula.

| Health and Physical Education |
The initial three-year professional development programmes for this curriculum area have been completed. In 2002, the Ministry will provide additional support through School Support Services to assist teachers to use the framework of Health and Physical Education in the New Zealand Curriculum. The aim of this support will be to:
- improve teaching and learning related to this learning area;
- develop school-wide approaches that support students' learning and well-being.
Priorities will be:
- support for schools that have not yet been involved in any professional development relating to this learning area;
- additional, ongoing support for schools;
- assistance with mental health and sexuality education;
- assistance with physical activity and sport studies.
Wherever appropriate, links will be made to new Ministry publications such as the series The Curriculum in Action. For secondary teachers, strong links to the NCEA will be established. Contact your nearest School Support Services for further details.
