Material Resources
An ongoing publication programme to support implementation of the new arts curriculum is under way. The following are some resources being developed in the various disciplines.
Dance
Dancing the Long White Cloud is a set of two dance videos, one for teachers of years 1 to 6 and the other for years 7 to 10, with an accompanying teachers' book. The videos, which are intended to help teachers "unpack" dance in the curriculum, will be sent to schools shortly.
Two sets of four wall charts, one set for years 1 to 6 and the other for years 7 to 10, are currently being developed.
Each focusing on one of the four dance strands, the charts will provide information and stimuli for classroom learning and teaching.
Drama
Drama in the Classroom consists of two video programmes and a booklet that help teachers understand
the elements, techniques, and conventions used in drama. The Ministry also plans to produce a drama handbook to assist teachers of year 7 to 10 students.
Music
Three music handbooks aimed at the generalist teacher are being written to reflect the best of current teaching practice and the language of the curriculum. Each book comes with a CD of relevant listening tracks. The first book, Into Music 1: Classroom Music for Years 1Æ3, was distributed to schools at the end of 2001. In 2002 and 2003, Into Music 2 and Into Music 3, for years 4 to 6 and years 7 to 10 respectively, will be published as well as a planning and assessment guide for
teachers.
Sweet: A Taste of New Zealand Music (an audio CD, an accompanying teacher resource book, and a CD-ROM) is being produced jointly by the Music Industry Commission and the Ministry of Education and will be delivered free to all secondary schools this year. This resource focuses on contemporary popular New Zealand music. A resource for secondary schools on all the main genres of New Zealand music will also be released this year, in DVD and VHS formats.
The Visual Arts
Exploring the Visual Arts in Years 1Æ6 is a series of books and posters. Each book introduces at least two contemporary New Zealand artists and explores one of each artist's works. The individual titles are: Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking, Fabric and Fibre, and Design
During 2002, a visual arts resource will be written for teachers with students in years 8 to 10 to cater for Māori students in mainstream education as well as for non-Māori students. In addition, it will include a unit of work related to the ngā toi document for teachers of immersion classes.
A resource on time-based art is also being planned. Time-based art includes works that are sequenced through time (such as a video), that change as we view them (such as a kinetic sculpture), and that may be ephemeral (such as a performance work).
