Literacy learning materials for schools

The taskforce agreed that teachers need more assistance than is currently available through the materials provided. This does not mean step-by-step instructions for teachers to follow but more detail to help them to select and use appropriate instructional approaches and strategies, particularly those to be used with children who are in underachieving groups.

Report of the Literacy Taskforce, page 16

Over the past three years, a variety of materials has been developed to provide teachers with the kind of guidance recommended by the taskforce. Teachers' feedback on these materials has been extremely positive. Examples of such materials are the School Journal Teachers' Notes for each new issue of Part 1 and Part 2 and the Ready to Read Teacher Support Material, now available for the emergent and early levels. After publication, these materials are prepared for online delivery at www.tki.org.nz/r/literacy_numeracy/professional/teachers_notes/

The 2002 edition of the popular, biennial classified guide Books for Junior Classes (item 26583) lists over a hundred new titles, all related to Ready to Read colour-wheel levels. In 2000, schools received a kit (book, audiotape, and video) on Using Running Records. The book (item 12583) can be ordered separately.

Under development are a video on guided reading, a resource on literacy in junior classes, and a resource showing teachers how they can integrate for developing phonological awareness into their literacy programmes activities.

Reading materials for years 1 to 10

A family of resources supports literacy learning in primary and early secondary classes. Each issue of Resource Link describes the most recent publications to appear in:

  • Ready to Read (years 1 to 3)
  • Junior Journal (years 2 to 3)
  • School Journal, Parts 1, 2, 3, and 4 (years 4 to 8)
  • School Journal Story Library (years 6 to 10)
  • Choices (years 9 and 10).

More audio support than ever

Audio brings variety to literacy programmes and supports the principle of "the use of a wide range of interesting material, fiction and non-fiction, in a range of media" (Report of the Literacy Taskforce, page 13). The recent move to CDs in Ready to Read and the School Journal means more stories, articles, poems, and plays, better sound quality, and ease of track selection.

Interactive multimedia to engage reluctant readers

The Game and other stories (item 26577) is a CD-ROM containing 11 illustrated texts with audio, glossary, and activities. It is designed to help raise the performance of reluctant readers in years 7 to 10 and has a particular emphasis on the interests of Māori and Pasifika boys. The texts have been adapted from the School Journal and the School Journal Story Library.
