Language-learning
materials and support
In order to foster learning, content material must engage the mind and activities must involve some level of thinking, with teacher talk acting as the bridge or scaffold between children's existing knowledge and what the task is designed to move them on to.

Pasifika languages

for Teaching Pacific Islands Languages (item 23749) and the sets
of language guidelines for Cook Islands Māori (item
23849), Niuean (item 23851), Sāmoan (item 23853),
Tokelauan (item 23850), and Tongan (item 23852).
Students'
materials
Fōlauga, an annual publication similar
to the School Journal, is an anthology in Sāmoan of material
in different genres at all curriculum levels. In 2002, the first CD
of items from various issues of Fōlauga, Fōlauga
CD One, was made available to schools.
The main Pasifika reading series is Tupu. Each Tupu title is published as an original text in one of five Pasifika languages Cook Islands Māori, Niuean, Sāmoan, Tokelauan, and Tongan and translated into the other four. Up to 2002, each original text (but not the four translations) was accompanied by an audiotape containing the story in that language and in English. From 2002, a CD will collect the most recent original titles in Tupu, in both the original language and English versions. Tupu teachers' notes provide suggestions for classroom use and a version of the story in English. The series includes material for different ages and levels of fluency in a variety of genres, including stories and non-fiction.
A variety of other material is published to support teaching and
learning in Pasifika languages, for example, the two song collections,
'E Au 'īmene Kūki 'Airani nō Tātou i Aotearoa
nei: Cook Islands Songs (item 27379) and Fātuga Fa'asāmoa
i Aotearoa: Sāmoan Songs (item 12822).
Teaching
te reo Māori as a second language
Teachers working in the Māori medium base their language programmes
on Te Reo Māori i roto i te Marautanga o Aotearoa (item
02970). For teachers of Māori as a second language, the 1990
syllabus document Tihe Mauri Ora!: Māori Language, Junior
Classes to Form 2: Syllabus for Schools (item 02654) offers a
variety of useful information, including appendices on grammar, tikanga
Māori, pedagogy, vocabulary, a list of supporting resources,
and an annotated bibliography.
Te Ata Hapara is a composite set of audio and print materials for
teachers learning te reo Māori. Teachers wanting to search for
vocabulary items can access the Ngata English-Māori Dictionary
free online at www.learningmedia.co.nz
Students'
