Ways of using the matrices and exemplars

Teachers can use the matrices and exemplars with individual students to:

by identifying specific aspects of a piece of work that the student needs to work on

by selecting a particular indicator from a matrix to work on
by discussing with the student the progress that has been made in relation to matrix indicators by encouraging the students to use exemplars and matrices to assess their own work and development by negotiating assessment and their next learning steps with the student

by evaluating the student's progress in relation to the matrices

Outcomes
New learning goals are identified and prioritised.

Expectations are raised.

Teachers and students are better able to measure performance and raise achievement.

Students are able to evaluate their learning and help to shape new learning. Teachers are better able to identify individual teaching and learning needs.

Teachers can use the matrices and exemplars in relation to the whole class to:

by using a selected matrix to identify achievement against particular indicators by comparing a class- or school-wide selection of work against an exemplar or the indicators in a selected matrix by using the matrices or selected exemplars to identify an aspect of learning that needs to be developed further

Outcomes
Teachers can:
  • discuss student work with a common understanding
  • develop a shared understanding of student achievement and the next learning steps.
Teachers can:
  • refine their expectations
  • inform their practice
  • reach a consistent, school-wide understanding of learning expectations.
Teachers can:
  • develop and meet appropriate goals for class and school learning programmes.

The principal and teachers can use the matrices and exemplars to report to:

by discussing their development or progression in relation to agreed indicators from the matrices by discussing their child's achievement and progress in relation to selected exemplars or indicators from the matrices by using the matrices or selected exemplars to focus on an aspect of science learning that needs to be developed further within the school's programmes

Outcomes
Teachers and students are able to conference more effectively and formulate clear goals for learning. Parents and caregivers are able to understand what work at a particular curriculum level looks like and to identify their child's next learning step. The board can develop more precisely focused strategic targets.

School planning and review
The exemplars and matrices can be used during the process of whole-school strategic planning and review to:
  • identify key targets in a learning area under review
  • assess whether these targets have been met.

Developing school exemplars
The national exemplars and matrices can be used by the school as a basis for developing the school's own exemplars for different curriculum levels in the targeted learning area.

These school exemplars and the progression they display can then be used throughout the school to further discuss and refine the teaching programme in that learning area.

These diagrams are from the teachers notes for the science exemplars.
