Assessment
Assess to Learn (AtoL) | Assessment for learning in secondary schools
Assess to Learn (AtoL)
This in-depth, school-based programme will be operating across all regions in 2005–2007. State funded primary, intermediate, and secondary schools are able to participate in this teacher professional development programme.
The use of effective teaching and learning strategies based on assessment for learning principles in the classroom enables teachers to understand and develop new skills in a supportive environment. The ability to choose appropriate assessment tools and to analyse and use assessment information to advance student learning are important components of this whole school programme.
The programme outcomes are:
- Improve student learning and achievement.
- Shifts in teachers' assessment knowledge and practice.
- Develop coherence between assessment processes, practices, and systems in classrooms and schools so they promote better learning.
- Develop schools as learning communities to encourage cultures of continuous improvement.
- To enhance strong professional learning communities regionally and nationally.

Assessment for learning in secondary schools
The Assess to Learn team in each region also provides support to secondary schools. Further information can be accessed from the Assessment page.
Now that all three levels of NCEA and scholarship (National Certificate of Educational Achievement) have been implemented, professional development will be increasingly focused on supporting teaching and learning in secondary schools, including effective assessment practice. Intended outcomes of current professional development include:
- Better access, analysis, and use of data to identify areas of need and to inform professional decision making.
- Teachers supported to make changes in their practices that will more effectively help all students become successful learners.
- Raised levels of teacher subject and pedagogical knowledge, including an understanding of standards-based assessment.
- Effective learning communities within and between schools are established.
- Teachers new to New Zealand are supported in understanding of standards-based assessment and NCEA.
- Using and analysing NCEA data to inform teaching and learning.
