Safety and Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC)
The Ministry of Education published Safety and EOTC: A good practice guide for New Zealand schools and released it to schools in December 2002. The Ministry funded a targeted professional development programme to support schools to implement safety and EOTC. The professional development was offered to all schools from July 2003 to June 2005 targeting the principal, a board of trustees member, and the EOTC coordinator of each school.
Outdoor Activities – Guidelines for Leaders
The Ministry collaborated with SPARC, ACC, Education Outdoors New Zealand (EONZ) and Outdoors New Zealand (ONZ) in 2005 to produce Outdoor Activities – Guidelines for Leaders. Copies of the book were sent to all secondary schools in November 2005. A CD-Rom version of the resource is also included in SPARC's Active Schools Toolkit for primary schools. The guidelines are for outdoor leaders, including teachers, volunteer and employed instructors, youth group leaders, club leaders and guides. The guidelines document current, accepted practice for some 42 outdoor activities including: tramping, kayaking, abseiling and locally based activities such as: a walk in a local park and outdoor cooking.
