English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
Quality Teaching for Diverse Students (Ministry of Education, 2003) recognises the importance of mainstream and specialist teachers providing supportive and accessible learning environments for students whose first language is not English.
Professional development is available through School Support Services for primary and secondary teachers, in establishing school-wide systems and classroom practices that meet the needs of this significant student population.
Meeting the needs of migrant, refugee and/or international ESOL students may be requested as the major professional development focus or as part of another professional development project or initiative.
Key areas may include:
- second language acquisition
- typical language learning progressions and well-informed expectations
- scaffolding strategies, supportive teaching practices, and useful resources
- individual and school-wide responsibilities, assessment and monitoring systems
- culturally and linguistically inclusive teaching contexts, and school and classroom environments.
Further information can be accessed from the ESOL community page.
