Jamies Tiger voice

Te Whāriki: He Whāriki Mātauranga mō ngā Mokopuna o Aotearoa/Early Childhood Curriculum and the Revised Statement of Desirable Objectives and Practices for Chartered Early Childhood Services in New Zealand (DOPs) are at the centre of all the early childhood materials and curriculum developments. The principles, strands, and goals of Te Whāriki are also at the core of DOPs 1 to 5. All curriculum materials developed for the early childhood sector by the Ministry of Education relate to these two statements. See below for a map of:

Introducing new materials

Colleen Lockie of Christchurch College of Education provides some guidance on using new materials (for example, the two new Empowered to Learn videos) that may be helpful to centre supervisors:

The usefulness of all new materials may take some time to percolate through. The responsibility lies with the senior management of each centre to exercise curriculum leadership and to introduce materials in a measured way to other staff. I would suggest that educators do the following things.
  • When a new resource arrives, open it and find out about its purpose and contents.
  • Work out a plan for professional development for your centre staff to take advantage of the new material to help inform their programmes of learning and development and their professional communications.
  • Decide on the most helpful focus to start with. What do your staff need to concentrate on first?
  • Introduce the material progressively so that, over time, all your staff will have the opportunity to become better informed educators.

Locating resources

In late 2000, the Ministry of Education published a minicatalogue Professional, Teaching, and Learning Materials for Early Childhood Education describing resources then available from the Ministry and other providers. Copies are available from Learning Media Customer Services (item 10092). You can also search the Ministry of Education's online catalogue of all curriculum resources at www.learningmedia.co.nz
