Here are some professional development opportunities provided by subject associations for health, physical education, outdoor education, and home economics.

Education Outdoors New Zealand (EONZ)

EONZ provides a range of courses for the teaching of outdoor education. These are user pays and are provided regionally for primary and secondary teachers, and other outdoor educators.

Outdoor 1 qualification
Outdoor 1 is the baseline qualification for teachers and leaders taking groups on well-formed tracks and overnight experiences in the outdoors. It involves training courses and 2 day assessment courses.

Outdoor safety management for schools

  • Legal obligations, safe professional practice – introduction to outdoor safety management for teachers and senior management – 2.5 hour
  • Outdoor safety management for BOTs – 1.5 hour
  • Outdoor safety management for teachers – 5 hours involves both theory and practical applications.

Curriculum delivery

  • Outdoor education in the health and physical education curriculum statement (4 hours)
  • Safe outdoor learning experiences for the health and physical education curriculum statement (1 day).

Other courses
These are available on a regional basis according to demand and include skill development opportunities, for example, kayaking, abseiling, bushcraft, planning a school camp, and activities for education outside the clasroom (EOTC).

Home Economics and Technology Teachers Association (HETTANZ)

HETTANZ provides workshops and a biennial conference.

National Certificate workshops for teachers of year 9 and 10 students, including the key area of learning food and nutrition. The assessment used in this programme is modeled on NCEA assessment.

New Zealand Health Teachers Association (NZHTA)

NZHTA provides support for primary and secondary teachers of health education. Teachers are encouraged to contact their local NZHTA representative through Mary-Anne McAllum

Physical Education New Zealand (PENZ)

PENZ provides support for physical education by providing a range of professional development opportunities for educators in the early childhood educators, primary, secondary and tertiary sectors, and for providers of physical activity opportunities within schools. Professional development opportunities include workshops, and the annual PENZ Conference.
