Changing fashions in sport and leisure

Context
Learning about history and sport through leisure activities.

Unit aim
To explore how changes in community demographics effect sport and leisure activities.

General overview
This unit involves the students exploring leisure activities in two time periods. This exploration includes the types of activities played and the nature of the community and environment at this time. The student pay a range of these games and consider the differences of these games in relation to the effect they have on their well being.

Key area(s) of learning
Sport Studies – Students will come to understand environmental factors that influence their sport and leisure choices and Mental Health - 7th bullet.

Underlying concepts
This unit will enable students to:
  • develop an understanding of how the environment in which they live affects their personal well-being and that of society (health promotion);
  • identify and reflect on factors that influence their choices and behaviours related to physical activity (socio-ecological perspective); and
  • develop an understanding of how sport and leisure contributes to their hauora.

    Brainstorm then research changes in community and environmental factors between early 20th century and late 20th century.

    Brainstorm and/or research changes in sport and leisure activities between early 20th century and late 20th century.

    Collation of brainstormed ideas.

    3A2 Participate in a range of sport and leisure activities related to the historical periods and provide links between physical activity and well-being. Play a range of identified sports and leisure activities.
    Students relate different activities with their contributions to well being.
    Students establish a contract to maintain regular enjoyable physical activity.
