Context
Learning about safety in sport through minor games.

Unit aim
To develop knowledge, attitudes, and values to play games safely.

General overview
This unit involves students learning a range of minor games and safety issues related to these games. Students will then devise their own minor game and teach it to their class.

Key area(s) of learning
Sports Studies - 2nd bullet, Body Care and Personal Safety - 4th bullet.

Underlying concepts
This unit will enable students to develop a collective ability to make a positive contribution to the well-being of others (health promotion); and help create conditions that promote well-being (socio-ecological perspective).

4D 3/4 Students will specify individual responsibility and take collective action for the care and safety of other people in their class during a minor game unit. Students will take part in a series of minor games and identify/evaluate safety issues. Students describe strategies to increase safety in minor games.
In groups, students take on individual responsibilities and create a minor game that emphasises safe practices.
Students completed self / peer assessed sheet on individual and collective responsibilities.
Students complete a written plan of their created minor games that emphasises safe practices.
5A3 Students will investigate and practice safety procedures and strategies to minimise risk in minor games. Students brainstorm safety issues in minor games and identify strategies for managing and minimising risk around behaviours, equipment, and environment.
Students practice safety procedures and strategies in minor games and apply these to the created minor games.
In groups, students compete brainstorm list of risks around behaviours, equipment, and environment.
4B2 Students will demonstrate willingness to accept challenges, learn new skills and extend their abilities in minor games activities. Students participate in a range of minor games, demonstrating a willingness to participate and use safe practices while learning new skills. Students work in groups to create minor games and teach this to the class. Students completed self-assessment sheet on their willingness to participate in minor games, and their contribution to the creation and teaching of their minor games.
