The Incrowd – Media and peer influences and decision-making
Jodie Howard
Halswell School
Key area of learning – mental health
Level: year 7
Introduction
Rationale
This unit was chosen for my particular class because they are at the age where these issues are evident and the pressures are real and affect friendships and families.
Background information
The class composition is made up of 13 boys and 14 girls. One child is Taiwanese and English is his second language.
The class level is year 7 in a full primary school.
The environment in which the children work and learn had been developed at the beginning of the year with the concept of Hauora – the well-being of all children in the class. When we are dealing with issues that may be personal or sensitive, then I reinforce the well-being we have developed as a class.
Prior learning
The required prior learning is the children's ability to work in a group, to listen to each other, to accept different viewpoints, and to feel safe in discussing their thoughts. These prerequisites go back to the supportive class guidelines you establish with the class.
