Breakfast
Alan Fielding
Darfield School
Key area of learning – food and nutrition
Level – year 6
Introduction
Rationale
It was discovered through incidental discussion and comments,
along with observations from playground teachers, that some students,
mostly girls, were skimping on lunch or consuming their lunch at
interval leaving very little, if anything, for consumption at lunchtime.
On chatting with these students it was discovered that they were
going without breakfast. It was decided to focus upon breakfast,
to encourage these students to begin their day with appropriate
food choices.
Background information
This class contained 32 year 6 of mixed ability, with a gender
split of 18 boys and 14 girls from a school with a rural/urban mix
and predominantly European in ethnicity. They sat in homogeneous
social groups designed to allow for interaction and inclusion of
students that would otherwise be left out of grouping arrangements.
There was a flow and exchange of ideas, with the majority keen to
explore concepts and accept the challenge of in-depth thinking.
They thrived on the challenge posed by de Bono's six hats of critical
thinking and used it readily.
Prior learning
The required prior learning is the student's: ability to work in groups, ability to communicate effectively, knowledge of the food pyramid, and exposure to de Bono's 6 hats of critical thinking.
