The 30th anniversary of the Aotearoa Traditional Māori Performing Arts Festival comes around in February 2002 and will be staged in Tāmaki-makau-rau. The festival will feature the best teams from the regional competitions that have been taking place over the last few months.

Te Tairāwhiti recently held their regional competition in Gisborne with nine groups battling it out on the stage. Waihirere, Whāngārā-mai-tawhiti, Boys and Girls High School, Ngāti Porou Rangatahi Tūranga Ararau 1, Tūranga Ararau 2, Hokowhitu, Aotearoa Wānanga, and Toihoukura all stunned the very vocal crowd with their performances! In the end it was Whāngārā-mai-tawhiti who came out on top. This roopu was first established in 1961, and was revived in 1976. The tutors are Derek Lardelli and Mere Waihi.

Some members of Whāngārā-mai-tawhiti share their experience of the Te Tairāwhiti regional competitions:

"While we were on stage performing our heart and soul out, the crowd were shouting at the top of their lungs. All our hearts were beating as one at that moment in time," says team member Jojo Rangihaeta.
