  The Millennium

Please note: These links were valid when this page was posted. However the Web is very volatile, and TKI has no control over outside websites. Please let us know if you find a broken link or if you have an update for a link. Te Kete Ipurangi recommends that teachers view all websites we link to before using them with students.

We've heard about it for several years now but time is fast running out and in a matter of weeks it will be here.

New Zealand has a particular interest in this event, as we are "the first to see the dawn of the new millennium". Just what is all the fuss about 1 January 2000? What is a millennium?

New Zealand's millennium programme focuses on four areas:

  • Cleaner, Greener - Kia Horomata, Kia Urutapu
  • Ngā Taonga - The Treasures
  • Today, Tomorrow, Together - Ākuanei, Āpōpā, ō-kautere
  • Pacific Vision - He Tāmina Nā Te Moana Nui-Ā-Kiwa

In this hot topic we look at the opportunities these themes present.

Starter Activities for Students: Gathering Background Information

    Teaching on line
    Academy of Achievement

    New Zealand History
    National Library's Timeframes

Many New Zealanders have achieved recognition worldwide. Research important events in New Zealand's past and the achievements of its people. Include these in your encyclopedia.

Cleaner, Greener - Kia Horomata, Kia Urutapu -Looking at conservation

    Kiwi Conservation Club

    Department of Conservation

    The Kiwi Recovery Programme

Many of New Zealand's native plants and animals are endangered. Investigate our endangered species. What can we do to help preserve them for future generations? Students could investigate and then present their findings to the class. Students may wish to discuss the possibilities.

    Ngā Taonga - The Treasures
Our Treasures, Taonga, are often vulnerable to the ravages of time.

    Wow it's science

Science and technology are working together to preserve treasures from the past. Students could compare this to other methods of preservation they are familiar with.

Today, Tomorrow, Together - Ākuanei, Āpōpō, ā-kautere
Pacific Vision - He Tāmina Nā Te Moana Nui-Ā-Kiwa

Combining the last two themes, students could research one of the countries of the Pacific. Look at the customs, festivals and traditions of this country.

    Samoa
    Cook Islands

How will the Pacific influence life in New Zealand in the years to come?
